JOHN EDWARD WURTZ

October 22, 2017

WURTZ, JOHN EDWARD, 54, of Coventry, passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2017 after a courageous fight with neuroendocrine cancer. He was the husband of Susan (Bell) Wurtz for 29 years. Born in Flushing, Queens, NY, the son of the late Joseph and Anna Marie (Anderson) Wurtz.

John graduated from Queens College in 1986 with a BA in Computer Science. He was employed by Fidelity Investments in Smithfield and recently celebrated his 20th anniversary with the firm. He began there as a programmer/analyst and was promoted to several senior roles as he advanced his career. In 2013, he was promoted to senior manager managing the team responsible for building new capabilities and supporting Fidelity’s institutional mutual funds technology. With his passion for training, John designed and presented several leadership topics to his peer managers over his career.

John was also a lay minister for the New Apostolic Church (formerly in Providence) in Coventry, RI. He served in the church for over 30 years as deacon, youth leader, priest and rector of the congregation. He shared his love for contemporary Christian music at church by playing guitar and singing with his oldest son, his younger son on the drums, and his wife on the piano. He played the guitar and sang with his beloved friend, Laurie Rossi, in their group, “Common Thread” where they played at numerous events for the Knights of Columbus, church and restaurant venues. He loved teaching “Financial Peace” in the community. John loved reading, attending comic conventions and cycling with his friends. He participated in many charity bike rides.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; sons, James Christian and Justin Charles; his sister, Denise Severo and her husband Miguel of East Meadow, NY, and three nieces: Ashley Bell of CT, Michelle and Alexandria Severo.
