ZULEGER III, Frederick E. “Fred the runner”, 80, passed away with his loving family by his side and joined his son James in heaven, they are now running in the clouds together. On Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at the Briarcliff Gardens Assisted Living in Johnston, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. 

Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Frederick E. Zuleger Jr. and Mary A. (Pierce) Zuleger.

Fred was a Vice President of Operations at Citizens Bank before his retiring in 1994.

Fred is a Rhode Island Road Runner Hall of Famer. After 40 years of running, 55,000 miles, and over 2300 races, he is truly a running icon. Fred has run all over the world, he ran through the Brandenburg Gate in the 1990 Berlin Marathon. On January 1, 2000 he ran the Millennium Marathon in Hamilton, New Zealand which kicked off the first sunrise of the millennium. Fred has run marathons in Dublin Ireland, Athens Grace, Stockholm Sweden, Iceland, New York City and Aruba. Fred is a CVS Downtown Dasher, he's run up Mount Washington its only one hill. He's most memorable race is the Boston Marathon which he completed 13 times. In August of 2017, Fred was honored for all he has done for the sport of running. By the renaming of the East Bay Running Festival to the East Bay Running Festival and Fred Zuleger 5K.

He is survived by his children, Ann Marie Rajotte and her husband Marc of West Warwick, Frederick E. Zuleger IV of Warwick and Robert E. Zuleger and his wife Colleen of West Greenwich; a sister, Elaine M. Haigh and her husband Anthony of Wakefield and was grandpa the runner to Breeana, Dylan and Helen and great-grandpa the runner to Devin and Brooklyn. He was the father of the late James T. Zuleger.

His Funeral Service will be held Tuesday at 10:00 am in the IANNOTTI Funeral Home, 415 Washington St. (Rte.117), Coventry. Interment will follow in Hunt Cemetery, Rumford, East Providence. Visiting hours Monday 4-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred’s name made to the Alzheimer’s Association, RI Chapter, 245 Waterman St., Suite 306, Providence, RI 02906 would be appreciated
