JAMES GOURLAY HELLMAN

HELLMAN, JAMES G. (Chief Petty Officer US Navy ret.) 89, of Sharpe St., West Greenwich, passed away at Kent Hospital on Thursday, August 16, 2018. He was the husband of Audrey M. (Koch) Hellman for 52 years. Born in New York City, NY, he was the son of the late Edward and Helen F. (Gourlay) Hellman.

James served in the United States Navy during World War II, the Korea War and the Vietnam War. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1964. James was later employed for 25 years as head of the labor union at the Underwater Naval Systems in Newport before retiring in 1987. He enjoyed nature, especially bird watching. He also loved woodworking and woodcarving.

He was the father of Sherry O’Brien, Brian Hellman, James W. Hellman, Kenneth E. Hellman and the late Janice Savoia and Kevin M. Hellman. James is also survived by eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

At James’ request his funeral services will be private. Arrangements are with the IANNOTTI Funeral Home, Coventry.
