LEWIS MATTESON JR. Obituary

MATTESON, LEWIS K. JR., 80, of Foster, passed away after a brief illness on July 25, 2019 with family by his side.  He was, for the past 59 years, the beloved husband of Edwina (Cansier) Matteson.  Born in Coventry, Lewis was the son of the late Lewis K. Sr. and Marion (Card) Matteson.

He is survived by his wife and 2 daughters, Susan Paul of Foster and Tammy Fish (Wayne) of Tualatin, Oregon, as well as 6 grandchildren: Katharine Lachapelle (Matthew) of Scituate, William Paul of Foster, Jonathan Fish (Monica), Timothy Fish (Amber), Bethany Carter (Joshua) and Steven Fish (Mallory) all of Oregon and 2 great-grandchildren: Wade Fish and Emma Fish.

Lewis grew up in Coventry, but spent his summers working the farm with his Aunt and Uncle on South Killingly Road in Foster. He graduated from Coventry High School in 1957 and New England Technical Institute in 1958.  He married Edwina Cansier, his high school sweetheart in August of 1959.  Lewis had been a member of the Army Reserves and made his career in the oil service industry.  He worked at Dahl Oil in Norwich, Connecticut for over 20 years as the service manager.

Family was his most precious possession.  He left a legacy of hard work, perseverance and kindness to his daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed being outdoors on his John Deere Tractor maintaining his 28 acre property and watching the wildlife. He had served as a church elder at the Norwich Alliance Church in Norwich, Connecticut.  He was an Associate Member at the Foster Center Volunteer Fire Company in Foster.  For the past five years he was known as “Grampa” or “Mr. Conductor” to all the children who came to ride the Barrel Train at Sunset Orchard in Scituate. Lewis made friends wherever he went and was always serving others with a smile on his face. He walked faithfully with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and will be greatly missed.

Visiting hours will be Saturday, August 3 from 9-11 AM in the Iannotti Funeral Home at MAPLE ROOT, 2000 Nooseneck Hill Rd. (Rte. 3), Coventry, with a funeral service at 11 AM.
