POMFRET, ANNE G. (PIEDMONTE) 94, of Western Coventry, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at St Antoine Residence, North Smithfield. She was the widow of Richard (Dick) G. Pomfret, Sr., having been married for nearly 50 years. She was the daughter of the late Josephine (Motte) Piedmonte and Denis F. Piedmonte, Sr. She grew up in Woonsocket, RI and was a graduate of Woonsocket High School class of 1947. She soon after married her husband and lived in Woonsocket briefly. She and Dick then began building a family. Outgrowing homes in Cumberland and Lincoln, they moved their eight children to Millville where they added a ninth child to the family.
She was an entrepreneur and always “ahead of her time”. Her home was featured several times in the local paper. First, for the large renovation project taken on to rehab the old colonial house into what became the family’s home. And featured many times thereafter for outdoor seasonal decorating of the Pomfret property. She ran a Christmas gift shop in the carriage house, “Kringle’s Korner”, a local antique shop “The Penny Pincher” and taught piano. Anne was talented as a pianist, singer, dancer and enjoyed participating in local variety shows, fashion shows, and other events. She was always determined to find solutions. Thus, a family project in the 1960’s of converting a school bus into a camper allowed her to take her family on distant vacations and day trips, and there was always room for others. In an era when women did not drive buses, she would give her husband breaks and take the wheel, leaving other drivers astonished.
She was brave. She taught her children perseverance throughout life. Starting in her thirties when her husband had a severe heart attack, keeping her family together, staying strong, and managing the property until he returned home and was healed. Her teenage son David was diagnosed with Kidney nephritis, and after some time on kidney dialysis, a transplant was needed. She was his kidney donor, giving David life a second time.
In 1979, Anne and Dick became aware of an OREO property in Greene, RI. It was a 65-acre property that included a residence and a campground. Anne’s entrepreneurial spirit was unleashed and she managed to successfully propose to and negotiate with the bank to become owner/operator of Hickory Ridge Campground. She continued operations after Dick’s passing. It was a forty-year run, with Anne in the office up into her eighties.
During her time in Coventry, she especially enjoyed her son Justin’s music, his teen practice sessions with band members and friends in the garage that would most often lead to their visits with her in her home. No matter where she lived, her house was filled with relatives, friends, and children’s friends.
Visitors to her home often just opened the door and walked in, like a part of the family. And that crossed over into her final days, her room was filled with many of her loving immediate and extended family members, giving her comfort.
Anne is survived by her seven children, Bethany Pomfret and her partner John O’Brian of Whitinsville, MA, Joel Pomfret and his wife Jean-Marie of Greene, RI, Alicia Pomfret and her husband Charlie Whitford of Coventry, RI, Melissa Pomfret and her partner Mike Beauvais of North Attleboro, MA, Justin Pomfret and his wife Hollie of Greene, RI, Arthur Pomfret of Coventry, RI, and Gary Pomfret and his wife Gail of Warwick, RI. She was predeceased by two sons, David B. Pomfret and Richard G. Pomfret, Jr. She was the mother-in-law of Richard’s widow, Denise (Pomfret) Fowler of Smithfield, RI. She leaves seventeen Grandchildren, twenty Great Grandchildren, and one Great-Great Grandchild. She was the sister of the late Mary (Piedmonte) Luttrell and Denis “Bo” Piedmonte.
