GEORGE, BERNARD W. “Bernie”, 83, of Coventry, died on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026 after a months’ long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was the loving husband of 62 years to Dawn (Berry) George.
A native Rhode Islander, George was the son of the late Gilbert and Louise (Piva) George. Besides his beloved wife, he leaves behind 3 sons: Todd George, his wife Kim, Eric George, his wife Lindsay, and Michael George, as well as a grandson, Trent George and a granddaughter, Madeleine George.
To know Bernie, was to love and admire him. He was a hero in life and a mentor to many. An Eagle Scout himself, Bernie dedicated 54 years to the Boy Scouts with 9 years as a Cub Scout Master and 35 years as Scout Master for Troop 39 Summit. He was a military veteran, deemed a “Mustang”- rising from the enlisted ranks to become an officer. Bernie served in the Navy where he met Dawn, then retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel and a Reservist. Bernie went on to become director of two laboratories, working as a microbiologist for the State of RI. In addition to his bravery, intelligence and strong work ethic, Bernie was incredibly kind, generous and devoted to the people he loved. He attended daily mass at his parish, Saints John & Paul Church and served as a Eucharistic Minister. Bernie’s favorite things were swimming laps in his pool with the grandkids, lemon danish from Borelli’s,walking and biking, family dinners, reading non fiction, watching NCIS and playing with his grand puppy, Charlie. A good and faithful servant, he will be missed dearly and never forgotten.
His funeral will be on Friday, April 10, 2026 at 10 am from the Iannotti Funeral at MAPLE ROOT, 2000 Nooseneck Hill Rd. (95/exit 18/Rte.3) Coventry, with a Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in Saints John & Paul Church. Interment with Military Honors at Saint Joseph Cemetery in West Greenwich.
