MENGE, CHARLES JOSEPH, 84, of East Greenwich and formerly of Coventry, passed at home surrounded by his loving family, on Friday, July 31, 2020. He was predeceased by his wife Dimity J. (Mumford) Menge in 2001. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he was a son of the late Joseph J. and Anne (Reyva) Menge.
After graduating from high school, Charles enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and when his tour was completed, he was honorably discharged. While providing for his family, he owned and operated the former White Cottage Creamery on Route 116 in Coventry from 1962 to 1968. He earned an accounting degree from Johnson & Wales University, and went on to employment for 30 years with the former Benny’s Stores as a warehouse manager before retiring in 1998. Charles was known for his great knowledge in stamp collecting and also vintage postcards.
He was the father of Catherine A. Rapose of East Greenwich, Joseph B. Menge, Brian E. Menge, both of Coventry, John Newcomb of Sterling, CT, and the late Charles M. “Chuck” Menge. He was the grandfather of Kyle Rapose, Austin Menge, and Jeremy Menge; and the great-grandfather of Hunter and Harley. Charles was the brother of the late James Menge and Joanna Seeley.
Visiting hours are Thursday morning, August 6, 2020 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am with a Service at 11:00 am in the Iannotti Funeral Home at MAPLE ROOT, 2000 Nooseneck Hill Rd., (Rte.3) Coventry. Interment with military honors at Saint Joseph Cemetery in West Greenwich.
