DAVID UNDERWOOD Obituary

David Henry Underwood, of Greene, Rhode Island passed away June 17th at the age of 93 at the Alpine Nursing Home.  He was the son of the late Lester and Abbie Underwood also of Greene.  He was predeceased by his wife Lois.  He leaves behind his sons Gordon Underwood, Greg Underwood and his wife Patricia, Glenn Underwood and his wife Faith.  He also leaves behind his grandsons Timon Underwood, Ryan Underwood and his wife Sofija, Logan Underwood and his wife Michelle and his great-grandson Theo Underwood.

 

David served in the United States Army and was stationed at posts in Labrador and Baffin Island in Canada during the Korean War and the after his service he went on to work for the State of Rhode Division of Forestry followed by working for the Motorola Corporation in Providence.  After leaving Motorola, he worked at the Kent County Hospital and then in 1976 started work on Amtrak in the radio department where he worked until he retired.

 

David was actively involved in the local community.  He was a volunteer fireman at the Western Coventry Fire District for many years and later served on the Personnel Committee with the department.  He also served on the Board of Trustees of the Greene Public Library Association for over forty years.  

 

He was a ham radio enthusiast and had the call sign W1SVQ.  He was skilled at morse code and attended many ham radio field days and inspired his son Gordon to become a ham radio operator.  He loved hiking and he and his wife Lois hiked most of the 4000 foot and higher peaks in New Hampshire. During the summers, David always had a large vegetable garden which was hobby that he got his whole family to participate in.  He loved trains since he was a young boy and on many of the family vacations he would add in visits to a places where trains could be watched.  

 

As per David’s request, there will be no services.  Donations in David’s memory can be made to the Greene Public Library Association or to the Appalachian Mountain Club.
