JOHNSTONE, ELLA G. “Dolly”, 87, of Richmond, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 21, 2025 at the Riverview Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, Coventry. She was the beloved wife of 40 years to the late Richard R. Johnstone, who predeceased Dolly in 2014.
Born in Hinsdale, Illinois, Ella was a daughter of the late Esther K. Cooke.
Ella spent her childhood growing up on her family’s farm in the village of Perryville (South Kingstown), Rhode Island. Dolly learned at a young age that she loved being outdoors tending to the farm’s gardens and caring for their animals. She went on to attend St. Bernard’s High School in Fitchburg, MA. After graduating, Dolly met Bernard F. Lessard, with whom she would start her family.
In 1974, Dolly married Richard R. Johnstone, with whom they would share 40 years of marriage. Richard, a lifelong fisherman, and Dolly would reside in Charlestown, RI where the couple owned and operated a fish market for many years. Always being a hard worker, Dolly would later go on to work in various retail establishments. Dolly will be remembered for her natural warmth, her optimistic and pleasant disposition, and her deep love for her family. She will be truly missed.
Dolly was the loving mother of Bernard D. Lessard, his wife Elizabeth of North Kingstown, Nanette D. Gallagher, her husband Michael of Coventry, and David J. Lessard of South Kingstown. Ella is also survived by her adored grandchildren Marie, Cheyenne, Kathryn, Kristin, Amanda, Landin, and her many wonderful great grandchildren.
Ella will be laid to rest with her late husband Richard at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter in the Spring of 2026. Pertinent information will be announced when it becomes available. Arrangements by the Iannotti Funeral Home.
