ELWYN ALTON HOLMES, JR.

Elwyn A. Holmes, Jr., 76, of West Warwick, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 12, 2024 at the Providence VA Medical Center in Providence.  He was the beloved husband of over thirty years to the late Joyce Marie (Hanosky) Holmes who passed away on August 12, 1999. He is predeceased by his loyal companion Roberta June (Witherspoon) Lightfoot who passed away June 2, 2014.

Born in Providence, RI on September 24, 1947, Elwyn was the beloved son of the late Elwyn A. Holmes, Sr. and the late Rhoda (Sweet) Holmes.

Elwyn was raised in Scituate and was a graduate of Scituate High School, Class of 1965.  He honorably served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Elwyn was a member of Laborers’ Local 271 in Providence and was employed by M.A. Gammino Construction in Cranston for over thirty years, retiring as a Foreman in May, 1999.  

Elwyn enjoyed fishing, playing poker and tinkering with anything mechanical and automotive. In the summers, he enjoyed watching the sunset from the porch while talking with the neighbors.  Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Elwyn is survived by his beloved sons:  Dennis R. Holmes of Las Vegas, NV and Michael J. Charnley, Sr. and his wife, Stacey Charnley (Wech) of West Warwick, RI; a daughter:  Denise J. Holmes of Florida; a daughter-in-law:  Brenda M. Holmes (Yurovchak) of West Warwick; beloved grandchildren:  Anystasia Holmes, Danika Holmes, Jordana Izzo and her husband, Gaetano, III, Michael Charnley, Jr., Ethan Charnley and Paul Fontaine; five great-grandchildren:  Alexander Holmes, Amaya Bertrand, Connar Roby, Salvatore Izzo and Leonardo Izzo; and a sister:  Barbara Hanosky of Putnam, CT.  He was part of a beloved extended and blended family. 

Elwyn was also the loving brother of the late Donald Holmes.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Visiting Hours on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 from 4 PM - 7 PM in the Iannotti Funeral Home at MAPLE ROOT, 2000 Nooseneck Hill Road, Route #3, Exit 18 off I-95, Coventry, RI.  A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at 10 AM in the Iannotti Funeral Home followed by burial with Military Honors at 11:30 AM in the RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter, RI where Elwyn will be laid beside his beloved wife, Joyce.
