FLORENCE G. (MEDEIROS) COATES

Florence Gloria Coates, age 91, of West Warwick, RI; devoted catholic, beloved mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully and held by those closest to her and surrounded by love on Saturday, January 4, 2025. Born to Mary Costa and Frank Medeiros on October 30 th 1933, Florence lived a life marked by her unwavering faith, boundless love for her family and her passion for creating beautiful handmade crafts.

Mother to Robert Coates, Stephen Coates, Mother in law to Rose-Marie Coates, and Stepmom to Karen Coates Howard; a member of St. Mary’s Mission Church and women’s society, her devotion to God was evident in her daily life; she found great joy in spending quality days laughing with her grandchildren, Carol-Ann Silva, Leigh-Ann Renfro, Orlando Silva Jr. & Jeffrey Renfro as well as her great grandchildren, Sophie, Avery, Lucas, and Carter.

Her gentle spirit and nurturing heart will be forever missed by all who knew her. In her hands, ordinary materials transformed into works of art; Florence was known for her intricate and heartfelt handmade crafts from crochet to needlepoint which she lovingly gifted to family, friends, and all who came to love her as their very own “Grandma Coates”.

Florence was preceded in death by her siblings Dorothy Coates and Colonel Raymond Mederios.

She will be remembered for the dedication she had to her accounting careers at the Naval Construction Battalion, Kent Hospital, and VA Medical Center; her faith and mostly the honor she presented in being a family oriented grandmother and great grandmother.

Visiting hours will be Friday morning, January 10, 2025 from 8:00 am to 9:30 am in the IANNOTTI Funeral Home, 415 Washington, St. (Rte.117) Coventry, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Saint Mary’s Mission Church. Interment will be at Notre Dame Cemetery in West Warwick.
