OBERG, GARY B., 78, of Coventry, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side at Kent Hospital, in Warwick, on Sunday, May 11, 2025. He was the beloved husband of 55 years to his late wife Diane A. Oberg (Kowalczyk).
Born in Providence, he was a beloved son to the late Clarence and Arlene (Govey) Oberg.
Gary was a member and former President of the International Food Service Executives Association and a longtime member of the Coventry Men’s Club.
Gary was a resident of Johnson’s Pond for over 60 years where he enjoyed swimming, boating, and sitting back enjoying the view with a cocktail in hand.
Gary was a manager by trade, and everywhere he went he seemed to run into someone who used to work for him that expressed fond memories of “those days” - a testament to the impact he had on others throughout his career. Gary also worked as a Firefighter for Central Coventry Fire District and was one of the first licensed EMTs in the state of Rhode Island.
He also treasured his yearly escapes—spending peaceful weeks in the mountains of New Hampshire every April and enjoying trips along the coast of Maine with his beloved wife.
In his later years Gary found a love for woodworking, making homemade signs for loved ones. He would spend countless hours working out in his “doghouse” with his great grandpup/best friend Chip by his side.
Gary is survived by his beloved children Erik B. Oberg, his partner Jessica Torres, and Adrienne D. Tipple, her husband Brandin Tipple, all of Coventry. Loving Dziadziu of Mackenzie Tipple, Joel Torres, and Emir Oberg. His grandchildren were his pride and joy; always bragging to anyone who would listen. Gary was the dear brother of the late Ronald Oberg.
Gary’s warmth, wit, and unwavering presence in the lives of those around him will be deeply missed. His legacy of hard work, leadership, and deep love for family will live on through all who knew him.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, May 16, 2025 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at the Iannotti Funeral Home at Maple Root, 2000 Nooseneck Hill Road (Route 3), Coventry. Burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, West Warwick is respectfully private.
