We are deeply sorry for your loss - the staff at Iannotti Funeral Home
COVENTRY- Joan L. Matteson, 86, of Coventry, former longtime resident of West Warwick, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at Cedar Crest Nursing Home in Cranston. She was the dear wife for 51 years to the late Thomas H. Matteson, who passed away October 19, 2008.
Born on February 20, 1936, in Coventry, Joan was one of two daughters born to the late Anthony and Jennie (Ottaviano) Rawlins. A Coventry Oaker through and through, she grew up on Read Avenue and attended Coventry Public Schools, graduating from Coventry High School.
Joan worked for AMICA Insurance before having children. In 1977, she went back to work for the West Warwick Public School Department as a Special Education Teacher Assistant. Joan loved being in the classroom and was devoted to helping children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In 1999, Joan retired from the School Department. After she retired, she continued to make a difference and volunteered her time at John F. Horgan Elementary School.
Joan loved spending time with her family and friends. She and Tom were involved with Boy Scouts of America, Troop 31, Crompton and they were also members of the RI Campers Association. For many years, Joan and Tom were summer seasonal campers at Colwell’s Campground in Coventry (“the pond”). It was there they made many wonderful memories as a family and met countless lifelong friends. Joan continued to camp during the summer at the pond until she was almost 80 years old.
Joan was a longtime faithful parishioner at Our Lady of Good Counsel in West Warwick, and during the summer, Joan would attend Saturday evening service at Colwell’s Campground. With the help of her friends and Celebrant, Rev. Paul Lemoi, Catholic service would take place outside every Saturday evening at the campground during the summer with an altar that members of the campground constructed. The outside service was so popular that others in the community would come in their cars or boats to attend service. Joan loved to host her family and friends at home and at the pond.
Joan adored her grandchildren Grace and Tucker. In her spare time, Joan loved to knit for her family and friends, but she was truly devoted to the Prayer Shawl Ministry at Our Lady of Good Counsel. Above all, Joan was most happy when she was in the presence of and making memories with her family and friends.
Joan is survived by her children, Wayne Matteson and his wife Barbara, Kevin Matteson and his wife Paulette, and Susan Seamans and her husband Jonathan, her two grandchildren, Grace and Tucker Seamans, and numerous friends and extended family members.
In addition to her late husband and parents, Joan is predeceased by her sister, Anne Brown.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 2, 2022, from 9:00 am to 10:30 am at Iannotti Funeral Home 415 Washington St., (Rt.117), Coventry, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 62 Pleasant St., West Warwick. Committal Prayers will be at RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, where Joan will be laid to rest with her late husband.
