JOHN HOOD Obituary

Hood, John J., 94 of Exeter, passed away Tuesday December 11, 2018.  He was
the husband of the late Beatrice (Linke) Hood and retired Vice President of
Research at Ciba-Geigy Agricultural Chemicals.
Born in the Arkwright section of Cranston, he was the son of the late James
and Mary Ann (Willocks) Hood, both of whom came to this country from
Kincardineshire, Scotland in 1907.
He grew up in the village of Washington and was a 1942 graduate of Coventry
High School.  He received his further education at Rhode Island State
College (URI), the University of Delaware and the Yale School of Forestry in
botany, plant pathology/entomology and forest pathology respectively.
Prior to joining Geigy (later Ciba-Geigy), he had been a Rhode Island State
Entomologist.  He had traveled widely in North America and Europe and was
active in agricultural research circles.  He was a member, for many years of
the Agricultural Research Institute of Washington, D.C. and served two terms
as it's president.  He was also a director of the Council for Agricultural
Science and Technology (CAST) of Ames, Iowa.   In 1978-79, he served on
President Carter's advisory committee on industrial innovation.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a flight
officer with the 547th and 418th P-61 Black Widow Night Fighter Squadrons in
the South Pacific.  Among decorations he received were the Philippine
Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star, the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal with
two battle stars, and the Army of Occupation Medal.  Following the war he
served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel
with over thirty years of service.  
John enjoyed a lengthy 40-year retirement on his property in Exeter, raising
Blackface Highland Sheep, Border Collies, Shorthorn Cattle, and collecting
antique tractors.  He passed away at his home with his family around him.
He was a brother of the late William W., Marion J. and James G. Hood and
Marjorie Bennett.
Surviving are two sons; Keith Hood of North Carolina and Dr. Glenn Hood and
his wife Nancy of Rhode Island; a daughter Betsy Hood-Harrington and her
husband Richard of Florida, and two grandsons Travis Hood and his wife
Amanda of Redding, CT and Tyler Hood of North Carolina; a great grandson
Henry John Hood, as well as several nieces and nephews.  
Visitation hours are respectfully omitted and the funeral services are
private.  Internment to follow at the Hood Family plot in Rathbun Cemetery,
Coventry.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John
and Beatrice's names to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.  Arrangement by
