ZELENAK, JOHN S., 86, of Narragansett and formerly of Coventry, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 4, 2025. He was the beloved husband of Adrienne L. (Merritt) for 61 years. Born in Beaver Falls, PA, he was the son of the late John G. and Mary (Daum) Zelenak.
John graduated from Beaver Falls High School, then went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from Geneva College where he also played basketball. Before retiring, John was employed as a mechanical engineer and later a marketing manager for the Flowserve Corporation specializing in components for the nuclear power industry. Several company mergers required many relocations during his career including Williamsport PA, Provo Utah and Elizabeth City NC but he always considered Rhode Island his home. It was not only where he raised his children but also the only place people got his sarcastic sense of humor. John traveled the world for work and also enjoyed vacationing with Adrienne frequenting Mexico and Hawaii.
He enjoyed playing golf, boating on Johnson’s Pond and the companionship of his dog Aimee. John was a life long Pittsburgh Steelers fan, the one tradition of Western Pennsylvania he refused to leave behind, always hoping for one more Super Bowl title. Above all he relished spending time with his family, especially his seven grandchildren.
John was the father of David M. Zelenak and his wife Nicole of Narragansett, Beth A. Allain and her husband Todd of Plymouth, NH and Steven J. Zelenak of Coventry. He was the grandfather of Michael and Abigail Zelenak, Aquinnah, Maddox, and Addison Allain, Logan Zelenak and Ethan Theroux. He was the brother of the late Shirley Book.
Per John's request, all services will be private. A Celebration of John’s life will be this Summer 2025 at a date and time to be determined. Memorial donations in John’s honor may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org). Arrangements are with the Iannotti Funeral Home at MAPLE ROOT in Coventry. iannottifh.com
