GILLOOLY, JOSEPH J. Jr., 78, of Scarborough, Maine, formerly of Coventry, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully at the Maine Veterans’ Home- Scarborough on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. He was the loving husband of the late Lydia (Gonzalez) Gillooly.
Born in Coventry, Rhode Island, Joseph was a son of Mary Ann (Zawislak) Gillooly and the late Joseph J. Gillooly Sr.
Joseph was a graduate of Coventry High School’s class of 1965. Joseph then proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War where he served two tours of duty. During the 1980s, Joe worked as a Commercial Truck Driver where he traveled through every state in the continental United States. He worked as a Crane Operator at General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, CT and for Bath Iron Works of Bath, ME. Joseph and his wife Lydia also owned and operated their Dry Cleaning business in Augusta, ME for many years. In his retirement, he loved to sightsee and tour the country with his wife Lydia in their RV. In the Summer months, Joseph enjoyed spending time on the water on Webber Pond, Maine. He was also a longtime Snowmobile enthusiast and was a member of many Snowmobiling Clubs. He found solace on his snowmobile traveling Maine’s Interconnected Trail System and excursions to Maine’s Ghost Trains, located deep in the remote Allagash Region.
He was the loving father of Joseph J. Gillooly III of Lisbon, CT, and Doreann Gillooly-Nasin, her husband Jarrod, of Franklin, CT. Loving grandfather of Nor’Anna Nasin. He was the brother of Anne Marie Gillooly. Joe is also survived by his former wife, Doris Enid (Steenstra) Herrick.
Family and friends are invited to a visiting hour on Thursday, August 7, 2025 from 8:30 AM - 10:30 AM in the Iannotti Funeral Home at MAPLE ROOT, 2000 Nooseneck Hill Road (Route 3), Coventry. Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM in Saints John & Paul Church, 341 South Main Street, Coventry. Burial with Military Funeral Honors to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, West Greenwich.
