MAGUIRE, JOSEPH A., age 104, of Coventry, passed at the Miriam Hospital on Sunday, February 7, 2021. He was predeceased by his wife Claire E. (Gillespie) Maguire in 2007 and a son James S. Maguire in 2013. Born in Moosup, CT, he was a son of the late George and Auxilia (Picard) Maguire.
Joseph served in the Seabees in the United States Navy during WWII. He was in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of War and along with his Seabee battalion, was responsible for constructing much of the infrastructure; sometimes under hostile conditions; in support of the Campaign to defeat the enemy. He trained at the USMC Camp LeJeune. After honorable discharge, Joseph married and provided for his family. He owned and operated the former Maguire’s Lace Mill until retiring at age 96 in 2013. He loved to spend time with his family, and he was always willing to help with many carpentry and construction projects.
He is survived by a son Andrew J. Maguire of Stephentown, NY; daughters-in-law Bonnie Maguire of Stephentown, and Paula A. Maguire of Coventry. Joseph is also survived by five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a sister Rita Pelletier. He was the brother of the late George, Mederic, and Henry Maguire.
Due to the pandemic, a committal service with military honors in Rathbun Cemetery in Coventry will be private for the family. Arrangements are with the Iannotti Funeral Home at MAPLE ROOT, 2000 Nooseneck Hill Rd., (Rte.3) Coventry. iannottifh.com
