Karen Marie (Mottshaw) Schaffran, 60, of Coventry, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 2, 2024 at Kent Hospital in Warwick.  She was the beloved wife of over forty years to John G. Schaffran.  


Born in Warwick, RI on November 6, 1963, she was the loving daughter of Kenneth G. Mottshaw, Jr. of North Carolina and Margaret R. (Carmody) Mottshaw of Tampa, Florida.


Karen was raised in Coventry and was educated at Our Lady of Czenstochowa School in Coventry and graduated from St. Xavier Academy in Providence, Class of 1981.  Karen earned a Nursing Degree from the former Newport Hospital School of Nursing in 1989 and later earned a Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Rhode Island.


Karen was the Director of Nursing at long term Nursing Facilities and later was employed at Kent Hospital for eight years.  After her service at Kent Hospital, Karen was employed as a Nurse Practitioner in Family Practices, Urgent Care Facilities and was a Gastrointestinal Nurse Practitioner before being diagnosed with her illness.  


Karen enjoyed spending time at her second home in Ludlow, Vermont where she enjoyed the outdoors, skiing, snowmobiling and horseback riding.  She also enjoyed reading and especially treasured spending time with her beloved grandchildren.


In addition to her beloved husband, Karen is survived by a loving son:  Matthew J. Schaffran and his wife, Jennifer of Coventry and their children:  Emma and Lukas; a beloved daughter:  Amanda Verrier and her husband, Michael of Hope, RI and their children:  Caleb, Ronan, Mason, Mitchell and Olivia; two brothers:  John Mottshaw and his wife, Paula of Foster and Todd Mottshaw of Coventry; a sister:  Patricia Mottshaw of Providence; two nephews:  Tyler and Cody; a niece:  Megan;  a mother-in-law:  Jeanne Carr of North Kingstown; and a father-in-law:  Jerome Schaffran of North Kingstown.


She was the loving sister-in-law of the late Lisa Schaffran.


Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Visiting Hours on Friday, February 16, 2024 from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM with a blessing at 7:00 PM in the Iannotti Funeral Home, 415 Washington Street, Route #117, Coventry, RI.  Private interment will follow at a later date in Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery in North Kingstown.
