Kathleen Gilfillan, 68, born in Providence, RI passed away peacefully on February 28, 2024 at Kent Hospital after a three year battle with endometrial cancer. She was the beloved daughter of John and Estelle Mary Holt; she was the only sister to three older brothers, predeceased by John Holt and Thomas Holt; and lived many happy (depending on which sibling you ask) years next to her surviving brother Dennis Holt and his loving wife, Ellen (predeceased) in Arizona.

Kathleen was the definition of a survivor. She faced many adversities in her life, losing two brothers before her 18th birthday; having parents that passed away young in her life; leading a single parent household; graduating from college as an adult student; being a person of size in systems that marginalized her; and the final battle for her life with cancer.
“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us”. - Gandalf the Grey

Kath or Mom or Grammie (as she allowed those she deemed close enough to call her) was a kind, helpful, occasionally funny, and caring soul. She was grateful for several accomplishments in her lifetime. Her kids, Sean Gilfillan, Casey Gilfillan Amaral, and her son-in-law, Matthew Amaral; being a Grammie to 10 beautiful grandchildren, Sonny, Kylie, Tristan, Sadie, Ian, Isla, Makaylah, Rory, Jonathon, and Mia; her relationships with her family, nephew Jack Holt and his partner Dave, Sheila, Cousin Penny and Cousin Lori; being an adult graduate of JWU; completing her Masters in Education; having a career as a Teacher; and last but certainly not least, being a crazy cat lady with her boys Legolas and Roderick. She was an animal lover, having many fur babies over her lifetime, Taffy, Scratcher, Cheyenne, Trixie, Stonecold Steve Austin, and Guinness. She always wanted to live by the water and was able to enjoy her studio on Johnson's Pond for the last two years of her life. She loved watching the sunset from her deck windows with the cats sitting respectively on her lap and shoulder. She enjoyed spending time with her neighbors at Friday night fire but would have to feed her cats occasionally to get her introverted self home. She finished her career in teaching as a librarian and still continued that passion of reading by joining the local book club. The researcher in her loved to explore her family’s genealogy and learn where it all started. She loved to travel with her best friend, Marilaine Bell and encouraged all those around her to explore this world.

Grammie loved being with her grandkids, taking them to the library, watching them swim, and being the best movie night snuggle pal. Her family and friends meant the world to her. We know you are resting peacefully. We will live our life in your honor. Your energy will always be around because as Rory reminded us: “legends never die”.
