SMITH, MICHAEL J., 62, of Coventry and formerly of North Kingstown passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, January 26, 2025. He was the loving husband of Debra A. (Hill) Smith for 37 years, and the dedicated father of Gregory M.H. Smith and Zachary R.H. Smith, both of North Kingstown. Born Lynwood, California, he was a son of the late Kenneth J. Smith and the late Eleanor J. (Fleming) Smith-Follett.
Michael was raised in Coventry, attended Saints John & Paul Parochial School and graduated with high honors from Bishop Hendricken High School in 1980. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island in 1984.
Michael recently retired after a productive career of over 40 years as an Electrical Engineer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport, RI. He excelled in his career and he took much pride in mentoring, often going out of his way to offer guidance and support to colleagues and friends alike.
Michael had a deep Catholic faith, and was a dedicated parishioner of Saints John & Paul Church as well as a member and Treasurer of the Knights of Columbus St. Francis Council 2011 in Wickford, where he served the community with devotion and compassion.
Never one to remain idle, Michael led a life full of passion and curiosity. He enjoyed an array of activities, including biking, camping, flying drones, traveling, skiing, and exploring the culinary arts. A true Jack of all trades, Michael found joy in taking on homebuilding, gardening and woodworking projects that showcased his creativity and skill. In addition to his personal pursuits, Michael was deeply committed to giving back to the community. He coached youth soccer in Coventry for many years, and cherished the time spent with his sons at various sporting events, always supporting and encouraging them with love and enthusiasm.
Michael will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and the lasting impact he had on those who knew him. His legacy of hard work, dedication, and love for life will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who knew him.
He leaves his twin brother Mark R. Smith (Karen). Michael was the brother-in-law of Constance Carroll (Richard) and Michael Pitt. He was the uncle of Kyle Smith, Shannon Smith-Kane, Thomas and Jack Carroll, Michael Jr. and Garrett Pitt.
His funeral will be on Monday, February 3, 2025 at 10:00 am from the Iannotti Funeral Home at MAPLE ROOT, 2000 Nooseneck Hill Rd., (95/exit 18/Rte.3) Coventry, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at Saints John & Paul Church. Interment at St. Joseph Cemetery in West Greenwich. Visiting hours are Sunday, February 2, 2025 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Michael J.
