MICHAEL (MICKEY) DEGIOVANNI, SR. Obituary

COVENTRY- Michael (Mickey) Andrew DeGiovanni, Sr, 92, a longtime resident of Coventry, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2022, surrounded by the love, comfort, and care of his family at Orchard View Manor in East Providence. He was the devoted husband for 65 wonderful years to the love of his life, the late Diana E. (Rocchio) DeGiovanni, who passed away on September 26, 2022.

Born on July 12, 1930, in Providence, Michael was the youngest of two sons born to the late Batista and Katherine (Capaldi) DeGiovanni. He grew up in the North End of Providence and was a graduate of Hope High School as a member of the Class of 1948.

As a young man, Michael worked in the jewelry industry for Speidel in Providence. It was while working there that he met Diana. They exchanged nuptials on August 14, 1957 and together raised three children and celebrated 65 years of marriage.

A man with a keen eye for detail and a natural artistic ability, Michael worked as a Cartographer for the Defense Mapping Agency in their office in West Warwick. Before the days of satellites and GPS, Michael had the job of drawing and producing maps for the US Armed Forces in both peacetime and throughout the Vietnam War. Following his retirement as a Cartographer in 1985, Michael kept busy helping Roch’s Market deliver produce to area restaurants.

In his spare time, Michael had many hobbies and interests. He was an avid golfer and spent much of his time on the fairways and greens of Coventry Pines Country Club. Michael enjoyed going on leisurely drives with his wife and family and stopping at restaurants throughout the Ocean State. He was a “social butterfly” and loved to spend time with his friends, especially at Club Jogues, where he was a longtime member. Michael was also a talented artist, making many detailed sketches by hand and he loved painting faces on pumpkins for his grandchildren at Halloween. Michael was at his happiest when he was in the presence of, and making memories with his treasured family, especially his grandchildren.

Michael is survived by his cherished and proud children: Karen D. Hayes, and her husband, William, of Litchfield, NH; Michael A. DeGiovanni Jr., and his wife, Kelly, of Hope Valley, RI; and Diane M. Shuchman, and her husband, Daniel, of Coventry, RI. He will be greatly missed by his adoring grandchildren: Julia DeGiovanni; James Hayes; Alyzza DeGiovanni; and Eva and Anna Shuchman. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family members.

In addition to his wife and parents, Michael is predeceased by his older brother: Jack R. DeGiovanni.
