WHITAKER, NANCY P. (FAGAN) 90, of Coventry, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 13, 2025 at Rhode Island Hospital. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Richard E. Whitaker Sr. in 1985. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Albertine (LaChance) Fagan.
Nancy was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Nancy had a strong Catholic faith and she was a dedicated parishioner of Saint Gregory the Great Church. She enjoyed reading, puzzle solving, traveling and family celebrations at their home on Little Sebago Lake in Maine.
Upon graduating from High School, Nancy enrolled in the RI School of Nursing program, graduating in 1955. She worked at RI Hospital for several years before moving to Coventry. Nancy then worked at Kent Hospital for many years retiring as a Nurse Supervisor in 2004. During her tenure Nancy served on several committees. One of which was the Ethics Committee, which in collaboration with the late Dr. William McKenny, was developed and initiated. Nancy was proud to serve as the Ethics Committee’s chairperson for several years. Nancy was a member and a past-president of the RI Hospital Alumni and the Lucy C. Ayers Memorial Foundation. Nancy was a member of the RI and Southeast Massachusetts Oncology Society and was honored in 2011 by being chosen Nurse of the Year.
Nancy wishes to thank the “After Mass Sunday Breakfast Group members” and at St. Gregory the Great Church pastor David Ricard, as well as Dr. Timothy Manown & Associates, also Ryan her mentee, Paula, Lois (Fluffy) and Joseph who were always there for her.
Nancy was the mother of Stephen L. Whitaker of Coventry, Gail P. Whitaker of West Warwick, Russell P. Whitaker (Robin), of Coventry, and the late Andrew J. “Andy” Whitaker, Richard E. “Rick” Whitaker Jr., and James M. “Jimbo” Whitaker. She was the grandmother of Richard Makely, Ashley Lombardo (Frank), Danielle DiPietro (Johnathan), Madison, Ryann Whitaker, Seminarian Nicholas J. Delfino- Whitaker and Kailey Whitaker; and the great-grandmother of Landon, Liella, Arya, Kohen, Jamie and Brooke. Nancy was the sister of the late Leo Fagan.
Visiting hours are Friday morning, October 17, 2025 from 8:30 am to 10:00 am in the Iannotti Funeral Home at MAPLE ROOT, 2000 Nooseneck Hill Rd. (Rte.3) Coventry, with a Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am in Saint Gregory the Great Church. Interment at the RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter. iannottifh.com
