BELANGER, RICHARD R. “DICK” 89, of Cypress Rd., Coventry, passed away at Kent Hospital, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. He was the husband of Diane L. (Ritchotte) Belanger. They were happily married for 65 years.
Born in Coventry, he was a son of the late Walter and Rose (Gamelin) Belanger.
After graduating from West Warwick High School, Richard enlisted in the United States Navy serving during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge, Richard went on to employment as an electrical inspector at General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton for 38 years before retiring. Richard was a dedicated parishioner of Saints John & Paul Church. He was a Eucharistic Minister, served on various church committees, and volunteered to assist in many capacities for over 20 years. He was also a member of the Msgr. Peter E. Blessing Council #5273 Knights of Columbus. As a distinguished Grand Knight, Richard was proud to participate in many charitable activities. Richard was also a past president of the AARP local chapter.
Richard was a cyclist, a lifestyle he enjoyed until just recently. He was also an accomplished bowler, belonging to many leagues at Lang's Bowlarama in Cranston. He recently achieved a score of 299, and what an accomplishment!
Richard was the father of Joanne Belanger (Tom) of Charlotte, NC, Debbie Belanger of Warwick, and Ken Belanger (Lynn) of Naples, FL. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was the grandfather of the late Lauren Belanger. Richard was the brother of the late Norman Belanger, Lucille Peltier, and Theresa DiFranco.
His Funeral will be Monday, September 18, 2023, at 10 am from the Iannotti Funeral Home at MAPLE ROOT, 2000 Nooseneck Hill Rd.,(95/exit 18/Rte.3) Coventry, with a Mass of Christian Burial 11 am in Saints John & Paul Church. Interment with military honors, at the RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter. Visiting hours are Sunday evening, September 17, 2023 from 4 pm to 7 pm.
