MOONEY, RICHARD D., 96, of West Warwick, passed away at home while surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. He was the loving husband of 71 years to Carmen G. (Leger) Mooney.
Born in Jacksonville, Florida, he was a son of the late Lawrence H. and Odette Y. (Desmarest) Mooney.
After graduating from West Warwick Senior High School in 1947, he joined the United States Army National Guard and was called to Active Duty to serve during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he continued his education and obtained his Machinist Toolmaker Certificate in 1956. He attended Rhode Island School of Design completing the school’s course of instruction in Jig, Fixture, and Tool Design in 1958. He started his career as a Silversmith for Gorham Manufacturing Company and worked as a part time police officer for the West Warwick Police Department. He served his apprenticeship with Leesona Corporation and worked his way up in the company becoming a Sales Engineer. This position required extensive travel throughout Europe and the Middle East where he helped set up textile operations in many countries. He completed his career working for Premier Thread Company; where, as a Textile Engineer, he developed new thread types and tested thread products for a variety of customers. Richard was most proud of his continued service in the National Guard. He served a total of 26 years, retiring at the rank of Captain.
Richard was the father of Karen M. Lapinski of West Warwick, David R. Mooney and his wife Lori, of Franklin, MA, and Steven D. Mooney and his wife Linda, of Narragansett. Grandfather of Eric Archambault, Curt Archambault, Erin Mooney, and Scott Mooney. Great grandfather of Connor Archambault, Sadie Archambault, Joseph Russell, and Jacob Russell. He was the brother of Margaret Grieben, Francis Mooney, and the late Lawrence “Fred” Mooney, Albert “Jerome” Mooney, and Paul Maurice Mooney.
Visiting hours will be Tuesday, October 22, 2024 from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM, with a Funeral Service to commence at 10:30 AM in the Iannotti Funeral Home, 415 Washington Street (ROUTE 117), Coventry. Burial with Military Funeral Honors at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
