ATHAIDE, ROBERT 85, of Coventry, passed away on Sunday, April 25, 2021 after a long illness. Born in Providence, RI on November 7, 1935 he was 85 years old. He was the son of the late Manuel and Alice (Green) Athaide, and loving brother of Margaret Bianco.
Robert was married to Elizabeth L. Athaide (Hunt) for 61 years until her passing in 2018. Father to Kenneth J. Athaide (predeceased 2020) and Raymond A. Athaide of Coventry. Grandfather to Christopher P. Athaide (predeceased 2009).
Robert was a US Postal worker retiring after 30 + years of service, starting as a loading platform worker and progressing to Bulk Mail Supervisor; during which time he was one of 15 workers nominated for Postal Employee of the Year Nationwide. He came out of retirement and took a position in the Johnson & Wales University mail room for 10 years educating them with his vast knowledge and experience.
He was a Proud Veteran of the US Army during the Korean War era serving in Germany with the Quartermaster Corps of the 7th Army. Robert was a True Patriach of his family, giving advice and guidance to those willing to receive it and help if able to those who needed it. For many years he was the sole caregiver of his wife during her times of failing health.
Robert Loved watching his “old westerns” and listening to the old “real” country music. Robert was an avid sports fan. He especially All the Boston Pro teams and his beloved old Providence Reds Hockey teams of long ago.
Besides his sister and surviving son, he is survived by 3 grandsons Kevin, Stephen, & James Athaide; 5 Great-grandchildren, and his 2 nieces Kelly Adams and Allison Flynn.
Visitation will be held on Friday morning, April 30, 2021 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am with a Celebration of Life Service at 10:30 am in the Iannotti Funeral Home at MAPLE ROOT, 2000 Nooseneck Hill Rd., (Rte.3) Coventry.
