WEST WARWICK- Ronald A. Bettez, 82, of West Warwick, passed away at Kent Hospital in Warwick, on Tuesday, January 3, 2023. He was the beloved husband of 59 years to Virginia C. (Azevedo) Bettez.
Born in Providence he was the son of the late Henry and Gertrude R. (Chagnon) Bettez.
Ronnie graduated from West Warwick High School, Class of 1958. He played as a youth for the West Warwick Babe Ruth League. He was named to the Providence Journal 1st Team and All Southern Division Team. He was also a standout 3rd Baseman for the West Warwick Legion Post #6. Ron was Captain of the team and was awarded the Babe Kowal MVP.
Ronnie also played for the American Legion Baseball Post #2. In 1958, with the help of Mike Roarke, he was drafted to play with the Cleveland Indians Farm Team.
In 1959, he signed with the Baltimore Orioles Organization, where he was released at the end of Spring Training. Ron also played and coached in the Pawtucket Valley Semi-Fast Pitch League. Ron was also an inductee in the West Warwick School Hall of Fame.
Ronnie was employed for many years as a Welder at General Dynamics.
Besides his wife, Ron leaves behind his caring sister-in-law: Rosemary Rego and her cherished companion Thomas Rooney; and also his loving aunt: Jacqueline Azevedo; and his treasured cousins: Bill & Joan Giusti and Joseph Azevedo.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a visiting hour on Monday, January 9, 2023, from 9:30 A.M.-10:30 A.M. at the IANNOTTI Funeral Home 415 WASHINGTON ST., (RT.117), COVENTRY, RI. A Mass of Christian Burial for the repose of Ron’s soul will be held immediately following the visitation at 11:00 A.M. in SS John and James Church, 20 Washington St., West Warwick. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, West Warwick.
