SONJA A. (CHAMPION) MASSO, 87, of Post Rd., passed away peacefully at Brentwood By The Bay Assisted Living, Warwick on the evening of Friday, July 3, 2026. Sonja was the beloved wife of the late Joseph L. “Joe” Masso, who predeceased Sonja in 2020. She was the loving mother of Steven P. Masso (Wendy) and Kimberly A. Iannotti (Gregory), all of East Greenwich. Born in East Millinocket, Maine, Sonja was a daughter of the late William C. and Geneva (Twist) Champion.
She devoted her career to the Cranston Public School Department, inspiring generations of students and colleagues. A lifelong learner, she earned multiple degrees in education from the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, and Providence College.
She found her greatest joy in caring for those she loved. An avid reader, she rarely missed her beloved book club and was never happier than when she had a good book in hand. Her kitchen was the heart of her home, where she expressed her love through cooking and baking for family and friends. Her Christmas cookies became a treasured tradition, eagerly anticipated each holiday season and remembered by all who were lucky enough to enjoy them.
Above all, her family was the center of her world. She cherished every opportunity to bring the family together. Some of her happiest memories were made in Ogunquit, Maine, where time spent with her children and granddaughters filled her heart with immense joy, gratitude, and a deep appreciation for the gift of family.
Besides her children, Sonja is survived by her beloved granddaughters Abigail W. Cates, Isabelle R. Iannotti, and Victoria R. Iannotti. Sonja was the sister of the late Nan C. DiNitto and William C. Champion. She is survived by her brother-in-law Amelio B. “Emo” DiNitto. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cherished longtime friends.
Sonja's funeral will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2026 from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM, with a Funeral Service to begin at 10:30 AM in the Iannotti Funeral Home, 415 Washington Street (ROUTE 117), Coventry. Interment with Committal Prayers to follow at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
