JOHNSON, VERNE E., 78, of Hope Valley, passed away peacefully at home with his wife Robin J. Darcy by his side on Monday, August 12, 2024.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of the late Russell and Daisy (Williams) Johnson.
Verne was a musician in his younger days and traveled and lived throughout the country performing on drums and percussion with various groups both before and after his military service.
Verne was a US Army veteran of the Vietnam War. After a break in service, he reenlisted, and retired from the Army Reserve in the rank of Master Sergeant with 31 years of service with over 17 years of active duty. He was an intelligence analyst and had many and diverse duty assignments, statewide and internationally. His last assignments were at the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Pentagon in Washington, DC.
Verne traveled to many places throughout his life. He was also a train enthusiast and he and Robin enjoyed many train adventures in the US and Canada.
Verne was a charter and life member of the VFW post 1469 Old Lyme, CT and also belonged to the Quahog Chapter of VASA. He served as a corporal with Battery C, First RI Light Artillery, a Civil War reenactment and living history organization.
Verne was predeceased by his dear in-laws, the late Marguerite and Brendan Darcy. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years Robin, brothers in-law Tom Darcy(Sue), Michael Darcy(Linda),nieces Meaghan Bryan(David),Courtney Quinn(Kevin),Brooke Darcy, great nephews, Connor, Declan, Van, Duke and great niece Shay. He also leaves his trusted and long time friend, Howland Green.
Visitation will be held Sunday, August 18, 2024 from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM in the IANNOTTI Funeral Home AT MAPLE ROOT, 2000 Nooseneck Hill Road. (Rte.3), Coventry.
His funeral will be Monday, August 19, 2024 at 10:00 AM in the Iannotti Funeral Home at Maple Root. Burial with Military Funeral Honors at Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Relatives and friends are invited.
