SZURA, WALTER J., age 100, of Harley St., West Warwick, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, December 31, 2020 at the Alpine Nursing Home in Coventry. He was predeceased by his wife Celia M. (Pieczarka) Szura in 2003. A lifelong resident of West Warwick, he was the son of the late John W. and Helen (Ciesla) Szura.
Walter was a decorated World War II veteran. He served in the European African and Middle Eastern Theater. Walter, a US Army Corporal, fought in eight major battles. He earned a Purple Heart for wounds received in action in the African Campaign in March 1943.
After returning home, Walter married, raised a family, and worked as a mechanic at the former Davisville Naval Air Station for over 26 years, before retiring in 1976. Walter belonged to the American Legion Post #2, the Anthony PNA, and the Polish Falcon Club.
He was the father of John W. Szura and his wife Susan, of Richmond, Walter L. Szura of Coventry, Jane C. Sylvester and her husband Robert, and Helen A. St. Germain and her husband Michael, all of West Warwick. He was the brother of Helen D. Studley of West Greenwich, and the late Jennie H. Szura. Walter is also survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was the grandfather of the late Jason R. Sylvester.
Visiting hours with face masks, social distance, limited capacity will be Tuesday morning, January 5, 2021 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am in the IANNOTTI Funeral Home, 415 Washington St., (Rte.117) Coventry, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am in Our Lady of Czenstochowa Church.
