BOWEN, JR., WILLIAM H. (CW4 ARNG, Ret.) of Cranston and formerly of Swansea, MA., passed away at the Cra-Mar Meadows Nursing Home on Sunday, September 10, 2023. He was predeceased by his wife Marilyn L. (Forstin) Bowen in 2001. Born in Warwick, he was a son of the late William H. Bowen Sr. and Ella E. (Carr) Bowen.
After graduating from High School, William enlisted in the Army National Guard serving from 1948 to achieving an honorable discharge as a Chief Warrant Officer (CW4) in 1984. He served in the occupation of Japan and in the Korean War. William also served as a Missile and Armament Officer until 1971 at the N. Smithfield Nike Missile site. He was with the 103d field Artillery as a maintenance technician until 1984. His service with the Field Readiness Center concluded 1991 with his full retirement. He received numerous awards and commendations, most recently the Honorary Service Award and Nat’l. Guard Emergency Service Ribbon in 2019. He was a life member of the Korean War Veterans, the ROA and the USAA. He was a member of the American Legion Post 228, Somerset, MA, Post 611 Taunton, MA and the Langevin Post 449, West Warwick, RI.
He was the father of Carolyn M. Picano (Stephen) of Cranston, Paula E. Marcus (Robert) of Wiscasset, ME, Douglas G. Bowen of St. Augustine, FL, Deborah G. Champagne (David) of Coventry, and the late William H. Bowen III. He was the grandfather of David Marcus, Amanda Marcus, Victoria Picano, David Champagne, Diana Champagne; and the great-grandfather of JC. William was the brother of the late Hazel Fluette, Charles and Richard Bowen.
Visiting hours are Friday morning, September 15, 2023, from 8:30am - 10:30am in the Iannotti Funeral Home at MAPLE ROOT, 2000 Nooseneck Hill Rd.,(Rte.3) Coventry, with a Mass of Christian Burial 11:30am in Holy Apostles Church, Cranston. Interment with military honors at the RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter.
